The Plan

This is going to be one really long day spent almost entirely on the road.  The park webpage says Tioga Pass won稚 be open until at the very earliest Memorial Day weekend.  There are a lot of avalanche zones they are still working to clear.  I found the site interesting because they post pictures of recent road conditions.  I was able to find a Caltrans phone number to call for road conditions in the Lake Tahoe area, 800-427-7623.  The phone message says rt. 88 is open.  I値l bring the chains just in case something happens.  I知 not sure how long it will take us to travel the 341 miles, but I知 guessing right around 7 hours, which gives us a little buffer.  We値l have to decide if we will take 89 south or head further north to 395.  There isn稚 really much of anything on this stretch of road.  We値l probably end up packing a lunch or eating 吐ast food at a gas station.  We値l be visiting Bodie, which is an old ghost town.  In 1877, the Standard Company struck pay dirt and a gold rush transformed Bodie from a town of 20 people to a boomtown of over 10,000 people.  Only a small part of the town survives, preserved in a state of "arrested decay." Interiors remain as they were left and stocked with goods. Designated as a National Historic Site and a State Historic Park in 1962, the remains of Bodie are being preserved in a state of "arrested decay". This once thriving mining camp is visited by tourists, howling winds and an occasional ghost.  Now its time to find some lodging, preferable without ghosts.  We could have spent the evening in Lee Vining at the Best Western or Murphy痴, but there really isn稚 anything to do there or even a good place to eat.  Since I want to ride the gondola at Mammoth the next day I decided to push on through.  We値l be spending the evening at the Sierra Lodge.  John and I stayed here on our last ski trip.  We liked it because the rooms were so spacious.  I壇 like to have dinner someplace in town and then check out all the ski shops and the Patagonia distributor.  We値l head to bed early because tomorrow will be the busiest day of the entire trip!

Directions to Bodie:
From U.S. 395 seven miles south of Bridgeport, take State Route 270. Go east 10 miles to the end of the pavement and continue 3 miles on an unsurfaced road to Bodie. The last 3 miles can at times be rough. Reduced speeds are necessary. Call the park if there are any questions about road conditions.
